If you served as a national serviceman, you may be eligible for free cancer treatment through the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) Non-Liability Health Care (NLHC) scheme. Unfortunately this is sometimes a poorly known fact amongst Nashos and their families and is not considered by health professionals either when treatment is needed.
Under NLHC, veterans with a diagnosis of malignant neoplasm (cancer) can access fully funded treatment — regardless of whether the condition is related to service. Eligibility applies to those who completed full-term National Service from December 7, 1972 onwards.
To access this support, you'll need a formal cancer diagnosis from your treating medical practitioner and a Veteran Gold or White Card that includes NLHC coverage.
